Nebraska’s On My Mind

I’ve been trying to write this post for over a week now. Every time I sit down to write about the devastation taking place in my home state, I sit and stare at the screen. I just can’t seem to find the words. Hopefully by now you’ve seen the pictures and videos of the devastating flooding that is taking place.

The lack of national attention and concern hurts my soul. I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had about it where I’m the one informing people of what’s going on! At several points during the past week, I would check the ‘mainstream’ media’s coverage, or lack thereof, and then understand why.

Now that the initial onslaught of flooding has passed through, I hate knowing that there is so much more to come as the Spring thaw is really just starting and it was a record snowfall year for the state.

I’m just now starting to see through the pain to what I’ve always known to be so special about Nebraska. The people.

We take care of each other. We do it quietly. We do it without thinking about ourselves. It is just in our DNA. If a neighbor or a stranger needs help, we’re there, in spades. We don’t expect a safety net. We don’t wait for official help. We just do it.

When you’re from the prairie, you learn to be self-sufficient or you die. That sounds drastic, I mean the wagons and Indians are gone now, right? Maybe so, but that is the spirit that is instilled in you when you grow up in the heartland. You can’t teach it. You live it.

So, my heart is still breaking over so many lives being upended, over so many animals killed, over the crops that will not be, but my heart is soaring with pride over how the people of Nebraska continue to stand proud, helping each other, and believing that this too shall pass.

So, keep praying and helping however you can. I will be visiting in a few weeks and I’ll have a lot more to share once I can see it firsthand.
