Happy Birthday to my oldest wolf who turns 21 today. Indulge me in a little Mom reminiscing because for the life of me, I can’t figure out where 21 years have gone so quickly.
You have ventured out from the wolf pack, aka your brothers. I would not call you a lone wolf although you have always been fiercely independent. You have built your own pack, far away from home. That makes me so proud but I have to admit there is a small part of me that aches because you don’t need me the same way anymore.
I think back to the day you were born. You were so perfect and patient as I figured out how to care for a baby. We were so shocked when the hospital let us take you home, your Dad and I were thinking, have they lost their minds, we don’t know what to do with a baby!
You’ve always been in a hurry to grow up. You walked early and broke into a run quickly. You were the type of child that never looked back, always rushing forward. So smart, you have always loved to tackle problems and tinker – taking things apart, building things.
You did go through a brief, bumpy period in high school but you bounced right out of it and found your tribe and several passions. You are resilient and that will serve you well. You love your family, your big, extended family. You love your friends. And you love your dog, who loves you second best, only after your Mom.
You are a great big brother. I did not say perfect big brother. You’ve always tried to be the leader of the wolf pack, even when that involved lots of tussles with the other pups. They sure do miss you being home but they are following in your footsteps as they venture out onto their own paths.
I love your sense of humor. You understood your parents inside jokes way too early and definitely kept us on our toes. You’re an old soul who has always preferred hanging out with the ‘grown’ ups to sitting at the kids table. That is serving you well at college and in work.
When I worry about where the world is headed, I breathe a little easier knowing that there are young adults like you who are strong, passionate, smart and driven, and I know it will all be okay.
So, dear boy, the best gift that my parent’s gave to me were wings and that has been my gift to you as well. Oh, and the cheesecake, your preferred dessert, that should have already been delivered because what can’t be delivered to your door these days?
So, even though I hate that we are not together to celebrate your turning 21, I know you are surrounded by your friends. So, know that your Dad and I will be toasting you this evening. It brings me joy to see you soaring. Happy Birthday!
Oh, and always drink responsibly and Uber often!
