Atlanta is a fantastic home base for visiting great destinations in every direction! I happen to love spending time in Tennessee and with Chattanooga an hour-and-a-half away on an easy drive with interstate or scenic back road options, I’m in.
Day trips are great because they don’t have to be planned out in advance, if you feel like going… jump in the car. Up early on a recent Sunday morning, I decided breakfast in Chattanooga sounded like a great idea. And Milk & Honey on the North Shore was my destination!
It’s a quirky little spot, my favorite kind, but come hungry because we seriously could not eat again until dinner time. Next time, we are definitely splitting one of these beasts of a biscuit.
We parked in downtown and walked across the Walnut Street Bridge that spans the Tennessee River and connects the city to the North Shore. There are great views from the bridge and we spent some time in the park on the other side before we meandered our way over to breakfast.
There are tons of must see things in this area, like Lookout Mountain, Ruby Falls, the Incline Railway, and the Aquarium, but we were here for the day just to kick around with no destination in mind.
We were chatting at breakfast with a very nice Tennessean gentleman who suggested that we check out the Chattanooga Market over near Finley Stadium in the First Tennessee Pavilion. You had me at open air market so after we waddled back to our car, we hit the market for some browsing (and more walking!).
The fruit was, oh my gosh, gorgeous but I did not think it would fair well in the heat of a car all day. There were also gorgeous fresh cut flowers that seemed to be flying off the shelves. There were a few surprises as well, like possum at this BBQ stand. Good thing, we were stuffed or I might have had to try that. All that coupled with a great crowd and live music and I’d have to rate this market as one of the best.
On the way out of town, we passed by the renovated Chattanooga Choo-Choo hotel, which was a favorite of my kids when they were young. You have the option of sleeping in a real train car which I promise you your kids will never forget. There are entirely renovated areas of Chattanooga that I will be back to explore, it’s so much more than the touristy, yet still awesome, downtown .
Heading back to Atlanta, we are already thinking about our next day trip! It’s like a little mini-vacation before we head back to work the next day.
